Scarlet Macaw
The Scarlet Macaw is one of the largest parrots and is well-known for its brilliant red, blue and yellow plumage. The species was once found across Central and South America but is now becoming increasingly rare due to human activity and poaching. Despite their endangered status, Scarlet Macaws are widely visible in Costa Rica, especially in places such as the Rio Celeste National Park, Arenal Volcano National Park, and Monteverde Cloud Forest. They congregate around tropical forests, moist lowlands and open woodland areas. In the mornings they can be heard squawking loudly and flying through the treetops.
Scarlet Macaws display intelligence and a high level of social interaction. They are known to form monogamous pairs for life, often nesting in tree cavities or large nest boxes. Once the eggs have hatched, both parents are involved in the care and feeding of their young, taking it in turns to bring food back to the nest.
Their vivid colors and active flock behavior have made these parrots a popular draw for birdwatchers looking to add the Scarlet Macaw to their list of sightings. But along with admiring the birds, visitors can also help to protect them. Education programs are now in place to encourage sustainable tourism and raise awareness of threats such as illegal wildlife trade.
So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable experience in Costa Rica, take some time out to explore the world of the Scarlet Macaw – you won’t be disappointed.
